Berkner is home to 6 choral ensembles:
- 1st period Concert Choir: our beginning level choir. This choir is for those who are new to choir, or have only been in choir for a short period of time. Students will focus on the basics of singing (posture, breath support, tone production). Students will learn basic music theory, and sight reading. This choir is open to any student interested in learning or becoming a better singer. This choir does not perform at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Assesement.
- 3rd period Chorale (JV, Bel Canto, Tenor/Bass): our intermediate combined mixed choir. This choir is 9th-12th graders who have been in Choir at Berkner or JH before, and have proven to the directors their abilities through participation in rehearsals, performances, All-Region, Solo & Ensemble, etc. Students will continue to develop their vocal tone productions, breath support, and sight reading skills. Students will learn intermediate to advanced music theory. This choir is auditioned by the directors.
- 4th period A Cappella Choir (Varsity): our advanced mixed choir. This choir is 10th-12th graders who have been in Choir at Berkner before, and have proven to the directors their abilities through participation in rehearsals, performances, All-Region, Solo & Ensemble, etc. Students will continue to highly develop their vocal tone productions, breath support, advanced musical phrasing, musicality, and sight reading skills. Students will learn advanced music theory. This choir is auditioned by the directors.
- Encore (Thursday’s 6-8pm): our A Cappella pop & jazz ensemble. This ensemble is 9th-12 grade, and is the ‘Face’ of the Berkner Choir department. Students will learn highly developed ensemble music and blend. Students in this ensemble will have many off campus performances and be ambassadors for the choir department. The students will have higher standards of discipline and personal behavior. This ensemble is extracurricular, and students must maintain eligibility to participate and remain in the group.
