Congratulations Region Choir Members!

Standard

After All-Region Choir auditions last week, we are thrilled to congratulate Grace Allen, Minzie Choe, Emma Dadres, Ashley Johnson, and Jamie Lam on earning a place in the choir.  Additionally, Grace, Minzie, and Jamie will continue to the next round of auditions to compete for a place in the Texas All-State Choir.

Everyone who auditioned put in a great deal of work to learn some truly challenging music, and we are proud of all of our participants.  It takes a strong work ethic and excellent musicianship to prepare for these auditions, and we are glad to have had many students this year representing Berkner.  Go Rams!

Berkner Idol FAQ

Standard

Auditions are after school on Tuesday, 9/17.  Sign up outside the choir room and be sure to grab an info packet.

The show is at 7pm on Wednesday, 9/25.  Tickets are $5 in advance, or $10 for students and $12 for adults at the door.

If you make the show, there is a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, 9/24 after school.

Do I have to be in choir to audition?

Nope! Berkner Idol is open to anyone who would like to audition.

Do I have to be eligible to audition/participate?

Berkner Idol Auditions and show are before the 6 week grade check, so everyone who passed to the next grade level from last year may participate.

Can I audition without an accompaniment/karaoke track?

No.  All auditions must be accompanied either with a karaoke track or instrumentalist.

Can I sing a duet with a friend?

Yes, but it’s Berkner Idol (not Idols), so there is only one winner.  If you have someone singing harmony/back-up, they are just there for support, and will not win anything.  Please, understand that your audition will be judged based on the whole performance (including any instrumentalists, harmony, back-up vocals, etc), so choose wisely.

Can I sing the song _______?

Yes if:

  • The words are school-appropriate (Google is your friend.  Ask a choir director if you aren’t sure.)
  • It is pop music
  • You have an accompaniment (either someone playing piano/guitar/ukulele/whatever with you, OR a karaoke track)

Do I have to sing the whole song at the audition?

Please be prepared to sing the whole song.  Audition judges will stop you after they have heard what they need to.

What if I can’t make it to the auditions?

There are NO make-up auditions, so if you miss the audition for any reason, including sickness, you will have to try again next year.  If you know in advance that you can’t make it, talk to a choir director.

When will I find out if I made it into the show?

Check outside the choir room for a list to be posted.  It will be at least 24 hours after the auditions before the list goes up.

What happens if I win Berkner Idol?

You get fame and fortune!  Aka, you get a gift card prize and you get to sing the national anthem at the spring pep rally, and perform in the Bando’s Spring show.

Car wash!

Standard

Our annual car wash fundraiser is this Saturday, 9/9 from 9am to 2pm at the Sonic on Plano Rd.  It is donation-based and the funds earned help us keep costs down (like the activity fee and end-of-the-year awards banquet tickets).

There is no need to sign up for a shift – all students should simply stop by and help for as long as you are able.  It is a great way to make friends in choir!

Welcome back!

Standard

We are so excited to start another school year with you on Monday!  We have been looking at our rosters and are thrilled to see so many names both new and familiar.

Our annual parent meeting will be on Tuesday, 8/29 at 7pm.  (Let your director know if your parent can’t attend.)

Welcome back! Have a great year 🙂

Graduation Performance

Standard

A Cappella Choir and Concert Chorale (3rd and 4th period choirs) will be singing at graduation this year.  Students will meet in the Berkner choir room at 6:30pm on Sunday, June 4 to rehearse and will take a bus to graduation at the Curtis Culwell Center.  Students may NOT drive to graduation themselves, but they MAY ride home with their families if they give Mr. Council advanced notice.  Attire is concert black (all-black dress clothes).

Seniors will perform with us, but will not meet us at Berkner/ride the bus with us.  You should follow the instructions given to all seniors regarding when and where to go on the day of graduation.

Pre-UIL Concert & Upcoming Clinics

Standard

Pre-UIL Concert

Tomorrow (Tuesday, 3/21) is our pre-UIL concert!  Remember, this is a regular concert, so ALL members of ALL choirs are required to attend for a mandatory test grade.  Student call time is 5:30pm in full uniform.  Please refer to the handbook for the grading policy, including absences.

We highly encourage parents & family to come support their students – they’ve put a lot of hard work and love into the music that they’ve been preparing!  The concert begins at 7:00pm and will be finished some time around 8:00pm.

UIL Clinics

Several of our choirs will be performing at UIL contest in April.  To help them be at their best, we invite some of the top choral directors in DFW to work with them.  This clinic is the only opportunity these students will have to learn from their clinician, and students gain the most when all members are present (having several members missing creates a different ensemble, with a different sound and different challenges, but we want our clinicians to spend time working with the actual UIL ensemble and its unique sound and challenges).  For this reason, clinics are mandatory, and cannot be made up.  Please move any appointments that may conflict with your choir’s scheduled date, and plan on arriving by 4:15pm.

  • 2nd period Bel Canto clinic: Thursday, April 6th, 4:30-6:30pm
  • 3rd period Chorale clinic: Friday, March 31st, 4:30-6:30pm
  • 4th period A Cappella Mixed Choir clinic: Monday, March 27th, 4:30-6:30pm
  • 4th period A Cappella Women clinic: Tuesday, March 28th, 4:30-6:30pm
